The difference between art and design

A recurring question, for which I could have a different answer every month

What is the difference between art and design? It is a recurring question for which I could have a new answer every month.

Art is signed, design is not.

This is this month’s answer, and you can read more about it on Otl Aicher’s The World as Design—there is a chapter on it called “the signature”.

Think about how you disagree with this statement.

Think about what a signature means.

Think about the opportunities that not signing your work brings to your current project.

Think about other differences between art and design.
